Flaxland -  Plant Processing day course

Courses for 1 to 12 people - held in the Cotswolds (please ask about other venues).

 

 

This is a unique opportunity to discover how the flax plant is grown and used to make a vast range of goods from the seeds and stem.  Set in the Cotswolds - in the textile town of Stroud, the course is great for those who are keen on hands-on activity or those who want to come along and watch.

Arrive 10.00am

Refreshments, introduction and clarification of the names used.

10 until lunch
The different processes will be worked through using our flax processing tools, there will usually be one or two flax fabric canoes and fishing props around too.

Hands on activity using flax grown on the farm.

Rippling
Deseeding dried and stocked flax, threshing and winnowing of grains to obtain seed (to be used/discussed later). Modern seed harvesting.

Retting
Information on dew and water retted flax plants and the benefits and disadvantages of each.

Breaking

Using both hand and roller break to start removing the woody parts from deseeded and retted flax plants.

Scutching

Beating fibres with a wooden paddle to remove remaining woody part shives.

Hackling

Feeding the cleaned fibres through a series of finer combs ready for spinning into yarn.

Lunch

We supply a light lunch.
Discussion on omegas, balance of fats in diets and innovative ways of using flax/linseed.

 

Afternoon

Continuation of morning’s activities for those who wish to take home more fibres.
The uses of flaxseed in nutrition and industrial.

The use of fibres in textiles and composites. Spinning and weaving fibres, (introduction only to spinning flax, dressing distaff etc, learning to spin flax takes some time).

We recommend bringing gardening type clothing and warm clothes in winter as some of the activities are in an open shed. There is a low level of dust involved in converting flax into line and we supply masks and goggles which are recommended during the outdoor sessions some may also wish to wear their own work gloves.


Depart  approx. 3.30pm

New for 2020 - We are able to offer overnight accommodation for those attending our workshops. These can be booked online - please state which night/s requested.  If you would like more information please let us know and we'll be happy to supply more information.

On the two day courses the second day will be spent learning to spin on a spinning wheel - all tuition included and fibre used, you will be able to spend time alone perfecting your spinning once you have learned the basics.
